Buying criteria

What should a school look for?

Start with the room and response plan. A good sensor in the wrong place, or an alert with no staff owner, will still fail.

Detection accuracy

Ask what the sensor measures: particle size, volatile compounds or both. “Detects vaping” does not prove it can name nicotine versus THC.

False-alarm control

Test deodorant, body spray, cleaners, steam and normal room dust. Ask who tunes thresholds and how long calibration takes.

Privacy

Check for cameras, recorded audio, keyword analysis, occupancy sensing, data retention and access rights. Tell students and staff what the system does.

Alert workflow

Map SMS, email, app and dashboard alerts to named staff by building and time. Measure the time from alert to arrival, not only sensor speed.

Installation

Price power, cable, network ports, lifts, patching and staff time. Battery and cellular can help where wiring costs more than the hardware.

Integrations

Confirm the exact VMS, access-control, API or relay link. Ask the vendor to show your version, not a logo wall.

How many detectors does a school need?

There is no sound rule that says “one per bathroom.” Start with each maker’s stated coverage, then adjust for the actual room and the response time you need.

Do vape detectors actually work?

Two questions often get folded into one. Keep them apart when you review evidence and set goals.

Can a sensor flag an event?

Yes, environmental sensors can flag air changes that fit their vape profile and send staff an alert. Room layout, airflow, distance, calibration and masking attempts affect performance.

Best measure: tested detection rate and nuisance-alert rate in your own rooms.

Will it cut student vaping?

A detector can support faster response and deterrence. It does not treat nicotine use on its own. Long-term change also depends on policy, consistent follow-up, student support and how the school uses alert data.

How do school vape detectors know someone is vaping?
They sample room air for changes in fine particles, volatile compounds or both. Software compares the readings with the room baseline and a maker’s vape profile. When the pattern crosses a set threshold, the system sends an alert. Read how sensing works.
Can school vape detectors detect THC?
Several makers claim THC or cannabis detection, but the claim differs. Some detect a broad vape event; others say they separate certain cannabis smoke or chemical patterns. An alert should lead staff to check the event. It does not prove which substance a student used.
Do vape detectors have cameras?
The five systems compared here state that they do not use a conventional camera. Some products analyze sound, keywords, motion, radar or occupancy. Review each feature as a separate privacy choice and turn off what the school does not need.
Can perfume or steam trigger a vape detector?
Strong aerosols, body spray, cleaners, steam and other room changes can affect environmental sensors. Multi-sensor logic, proper placement and calibration can cut nuisance alerts, but no school should accept a zero-false-alert claim without a local test. See the false-alarm test plan.
Can a normal smoke detector detect vaping?
A normal smoke alarm may react to a dense plume, but it was built for fire safety, not school vape detection or staff alerts. Do not alter, cover or replace required life-safety devices with a vape sensor.
How fast do staff get an alert?
Makers often say “real time” or “within seconds.” The useful measure is end to end: sensing, cloud or network delivery, phone receipt and staff arrival. Test that full path in each building and on the school’s actual network.
Are battery-powered vape detectors available?
Yes. Zeptive publishes rechargeable battery models that connect through Wi-Fi or cellular service. Battery units can speed retrofits but need a written charge, swap and battery-health plan.
