“Wireless” has three meanings
A detector may send data over Wi-Fi but still need a power cord. A battery unit may use school Wi-Fi. A cellular unit can avoid both the local network and a fixed power run. Write the required power and data path as two separate lines in the RFP.
Battery plus Wi-Fi
Zeptive publishes a rechargeable battery and Wi-Fi model. It can suit older schools, tiled bathrooms and leased spaces where cable work costs too much or takes too long. The site still needs a stable, approved Wi-Fi signal and a plan for charging, battery health and spares.
Battery plus cellular
Zeptive also lists a cellular battery model for buses, field houses, outdoor restrooms and remote buildings. This removes reliance on school Wi-Fi, but it adds a data plan and depends on cell signal. Test the carrier at the exact mounting point and along any bus route.
What a wireless rollout gives up
PoE offers steady power and data and often fits new construction best. A battery fleet adds routine work. Schools should assign an owner, set low-battery alerts, stock charged spares and log each service. A “fast install” is not a complete operating plan.
Run a room-level pilot
- Test signal at the final mount, not at the doorway.
- Trigger approved test events from the farthest stall.
- Measure alert delivery to school phones.
- Try ordinary deodorant, cleaner and steam sources.
- Record battery use over a normal school month.
